HOW TO REMOVE MASKING FILM
Our Guide To Removing The Protective Film From Plastic Sheets
To protect sheets from damage during transport, handling and storage, many of our products are supplied with a self-adhesive paper or plastic film on one, or both sides, of the sheet.
While cutting, shaping, drilling, adhering and handling plastic sheet products, the masking film should remain in place to prevent damage from scratching or scuffing.
Once the sheet has been installed, we suggest you take the following steps to remove the masking film:
- Start by peeling the masking back from the corners of the panel
- Keep peeling back the masking, working towards the centre of the panel
- Peel from a low angle to avoid tearing the masking or leaving a residue behind
- As you peel the masking, roll the masking to prevent dust or dirt from falling onto the panel
- While holding onto the already-peeled back masking, pull the remaining masking off the sheet
Here are some additional tips:
✓ Patience is important, as rushing when peeling the masking back can cause it to rip
✓ Limit the amount of time that panels with masking are exposed to the sun.
✓ Masking should be removed within 14 days of exposure to the elements, otherwise the masking may become more difficult to remove
✓ Even when stored indoors, do not leave the masking on the panels for extended periods of time as it may become more difficult to remove. Ideally, the masking should be removed immediately after installation
✓ If the masking does become difficult to remove, apply heat (such as a hair-dryer), holding it 15-30cm away from the plastic and moving it back and forth to warm the adhesive, but take care not to overheat the plastic panel, or it may cause it to warp or deform. Once warmed, try peeling off the film again
✓ In particularly stubborn cases where even heat doesn’t work, you can try using a mild solvent such as isopropyl alcohol or a mixture of water and mild dish soap. Test this on a small, inconspicuous area or an offcut first, to ensure it doesn’t damage the plastic. Apply the solvent with a soft cloth or sponge, let it sit for a few minutes then peel off the masking film
✓ Take extra care when handling sharp objects around the panel, as they can easily cause scratching even through the masking
