Buying Polycarbonate Sheet Check These 7 Things Before You Order

A clear panel can look right on a website and still be the wrong choice for your project. It might have the wrong surface finish, lack the required outdoor protection or need more support than your frame provides. The best way to choose polycarbonate sheet is to match its grade, thickness and installation requirements to the job. Before buying, work through these seven checks.

1.Explain what the panel needs to do

Start with the application. Are you replacing a shed window, enclosing equipment or separating two work areas?

Write down what the panel will encounter, including impacts, sunlight, cleaning products and temperature changes. Also explain how it will be fixed and whether people need to see clearly through it.

This gives you a more useful starting point than asking for the “strongest clear plastic”. For protective glazing or machine guarding, material selection needs to form part of the relevant design and risk assessment.

2. Check the sheet format

The term polycarbonate panels can describe different products. Solid flat sheet, multiwall panels and profiled roofing products have different construction and installation requirements.

If you need a flat replacement panel, confirm that the product is solid flat sheet. Do not assume a roofing installation guide applies to it simply because both products are polycarbonate plastic.

3. Choose thickness with the supports in mind

Thickness affects panel behaviour, but so do its dimensions and supports. A small panel held around its edges behaves differently from a large panel with a long unsupported span.

Before selecting a thickness, record:

  • Finished panel length and width.
  • Frame opening and edge engagement.
  • Support positions and unsupported spans.
  • Expected loading and exposure.

There is no single thickness that suits every shed window, screen or equipment cover. If the panel has a protective or structural role, obtain application-specific guidance.

4. Confirm the outdoor grade

If the panel will be exposed to sunlight, check the product’s UV protection and outdoor suitability.

For example, UV2 polycarbonate has UV protection on both sides. Plastral’s UV2 polycarbonate guide explains the purpose of this protection and common applications.

Also check the installation instructions. Some products require a particular face to point outwards, and handling requirements can vary between grades.

5.Think about scratches and cleaning

UV resistance and abrasion resistance describe different properties. An outdoor-rated sheet should not automatically be treated as having an abrasion-resistant surface.

If the panel will be touched or cleaned frequently, compare the available surface options. Follow the chosen manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and confirm compatibility before using solvents, adhesives or sealants.

For a workshop screen, think about how dust will be removed without rubbing grit across the surface. Planning maintenance before installation can help preserve visibility.

6.Measure for the installation

Measure the opening in more than one place and check whether the frame is square. Then establish the finished sheet dimensions required by the installation system.

Allowances for thermal movement, edge engagement and fasteners should follow the relevant product guidance. Simply copying the tight opening size may leave no room for movement or installation.

Keep the units consistent. A cutting list written entirely in millimeters is easier to check than one mixing centimeters and millimeters.

7.Compare the complete order

Before purchasing, check the grade, thickness, dimensions, quantity and any extra fabrication you need. A rectangular cut-to-size panel is a different request from a panel requiring holes, shaped corners or other machining.

Also consider whether a full sheet is practical to handle and cut, or whether ordering finished rectangular sizes better suits the job. Confirm the current lead time before scheduling installation.

Questions customers ask

Does clear polycarbonate sheet suit outdoor use?

An appropriate UV-protected grade can suit outdoor applications. Confirm the chosen product’s exposure and installation requirements.

Is thicker polycarb always the right choice?

Thickness alone does not establish suitability. Consider panel size, supports, loading and the required performance together.

What information should I send for help choosing a sheet?

Provide the application, dimensions, supports, exposure conditions and any drawing or existing specification.
