Perspex vs Acrylic vs Plexiglass: What’s the Difference?

You’re looking for a clear panel for a display, a replacement cabinet window or a DIY project. One supplier calls it acrylic, another calls it Perspex, and someone else suggests Plexiglass.

Are you comparing different plastics?

Acrylic is the material. PERSPEX® and PLEXIGLAS® are brand names for acrylic products. “Plexiglass” is a common spelling people use when referring to acrylic. However, sharing the same material name does not mean every sheet has the same grade, finish or performance. Here’s how to understand the names and choose the right acrylic sheet for your project.

What Is Acrylic?

In the context of plastic sheets, acrylic usually means polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA. It is a plastic used for clear glazing, signage, displays and many other applications.

Clear acrylic sheet provides a transparent surface that is lighter than glass of the same thickness. Acrylic is also available in coloured, translucent and opaque finishes, making it useful for more than projects where you need to see through the panel. Perspex

Common applications include:

  • Retail displays and display cases.
  • Picture framing and protective covers.
  • Cabinet windows.
  • Business signs and decorative panels.
  • Shopfitting and DIY projects.

The appropriate grade and thickness depend on how the panel will be used.

What Is Perspex?

PERSPEX® is a brand of acrylic. It is not a separate type of plastic from PMMA. Perspex

The name also appears in everyday searches such as “Perspex sheet”, “clear Perspex” and “Perspex panels”. Customers using these terms are often looking for acrylic sheet.

There is an important distinction when ordering: a sheet described as acrylic is not automatically a PERSPEX® branded product. If a drawing, specification or customer requires that particular brand, confirm it with the supplier before purchasing.

What Is Plexiglass?

“Plexiglass” is another term commonly used for acrylic sheet. PLEXIGLAS®, with one final “s”, is a registered acrylic brand. PLEXIGLAS®

You may encounter both spellings while researching materials. However, the search term “plexiglass sheets” alone does not confirm that a product is genuine PLEXIGLAS®.

As with Perspex, check the product description or ask your supplier if a specific brand or grade is required.

Perspex vs Acrylic vs Plexiglass at a Glance

NameWhat it means
AcrylicThe material name, usually PMMA when discussing plastic sheets.
PERSPEX®A brand of acrylic products.
PLEXIGLAS®A brand of acrylic products.
PlexiglassA common term and spelling used for acrylic.
Acrylic glass or Perspex glassTerms used for acrylic glazing; the material is plastic rather than mineral glass.

These names identify the material family. You still need to check the sheet’s specifications before deciding whether it suits your project.

Are All Acrylic Sheets the Same?

No. Acrylic sheets can differ in manufacturing method, thickness, colour, surface finish and specialist properties.

For example, cast acrylic and extruded acrylic are both PMMA, but their different manufacturing processes affect their properties and processing behaviour. If you plan to machine, engrave, bond or heat-form the sheet, check the manufacturer’s guidance for the grade you are buying. PLEXIGLAS®

Likewise, standard clear acrylic, mirror acrylic and specialist framing acrylic serve different purposes. A sheet that looks suitable in a product photo may not offer the finish or protection your application needs.

How to Choose the Right Acrylic Sheet

Start With the Application

Explain what the panel will do. A clear cover for a display, a wall-mounted sign and a shelf have different requirements.

For example, a display cover may need transparency and carefully measured dimensions. A shelf also needs suitable support and an assessment of the weight it will carry.

Check Thickness and Support

Thickness matters, but so do panel size, fixing positions and unsupported spans. A small panel and a large panel of the same thickness can behave very differently.

Avoid choosing a thickness simply because someone used it for another project. Our acrylic sheet thickness guide explains the factors to consider.

Choose the Finish

Clear acrylic suits projects where visibility matters. Coloured or opaque acrylic may suit signs and decorative panels, while opal or translucent finishes can be useful where light diffusion is required.

Confirm the finish before ordering, especially if you need to match an existing panel.

Confirm the Brand or Grade

If your project specifies PERSPEX®, PLEXIGLAS® or a particular product code, include that information in your enquiry.

Do not assume that any clear acrylic sheet will meet the specification.

Check Your Cutting Requirements

Record your length, width, thickness and quantity in millimetres.

Also identify any holes, shaped cuts or edge finishing you need, so these can be discussed before you order.

Is Perspex the Same as Polycarbonate?

No. Acrylic and polycarbonate are different plastics, although clear sheets can look similar.

Polycarbonate generally offers greater impact resistance than standard acrylic. The right choice depends on the application, including the expected impact, exposure and installation requirements. Perspex
