The Ever-Popular Polycarbonate.
Polycarbonate is one of the toughest plastics around – no wonder it’s so popular!
One of our best selling products is polycarbonate, or as it’s commonly known – polycarb, Makrolon or Lexan.
Polycarb is one of those products which people have heard of, but don’t know much about.
One question we get all the time is some variation of “Is polycarbonate suitable for my application?”
Polycarbonate is very similar in look and feel to acrylic (a.k.a. Perspex or Plexiglas) but you generally use polycarbonate in applications where impact resistance is a key requirement.
Polycarbonate can withstand impact from hail, rocks, debris or even a good, hard hit from a hammer.
We sell polycarbonate in flat sheets (not in rods and tubes like acrylic) and it’s primarily used when our customers are worried about the panel getting hit or broken.
Some of the main characteristics of polycarbonate are:
- Very high impact resistance (up to 200x that of glass)
- Light weight
- High clarity
- Can be to cut and drilled
- Good UV stability (all of our grades are UV protected to prevent breakdown from sunlight/UV rays)
There more applications than we could list here, but here are some examples of applications for polycarbonate:
- Safety glazing (machine guards, manufacturing etc.)
- Security screens
- Signage (especially in areas with high vandalism rates)
- Prison windows
- Residential windows (double glazing etc.)
- Light fixtures
- Skylights
- Shop displays
- Windscreens for heavy equipment
